Our Story

My name is Alma Björk, founder and creator of the Skrimslis.
My journey began in 2009 during a road trip around Iceland.
While visiting the small village of Vík on Iceland's south coast, a friend and I decided to buy wool from a local manufacturer. We dreamed of making sweaters for ourselves and our children, despite having absolutely no sewing experience!
What started as a fun experiment soon turned into a passion. I began creating handmade products and selling them in local stores. As leftover wool fabrics piled up, I felt it was a shame to throw them away. Instead, I challenged myself to create something useful from the scraps.
That was the moment the first Skrimslis were born.
Before long, the Skrimslis could be found in stores across Iceland. As demand grew, I began sourcing leftover wool fabrics directly from local wool manufacturers, allowing me to continue creating while reducing waste and making use of materials that might otherwise have been discarded.
As the business grew, my children and other family members joined me in making the Skrimslis. What began as a small creative project has grown into a family-run business that continues to create unique wool monsters from authentic Icelandic wool.
Today, the Skrimslis can be found in 27 stores throughout Iceland, and visitors from around the world can create their own Wool Monster in our cozy, family-run workshop on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.
We also welcome larger groups of up to 50 people in our spacious workshop venue nearby.
The launch of our first book
2017 we published our first book about the Skrimsli which was co-written by me and an Icelandic writer "Eyrún Ósk Jónsdóttir".
The book tells the story of how the Skrimslis came to be, and how due to technology they were suddenly forced to leave their homes, and for the first time in their lives prepare for the cold, harsh winter of the north on their own.

Exhibitions
In 2011, we participated in our first exhibition, the "Crafts and Design Fair" at Reykjavík City Hall. The event provided great exposure for the Skrimslis, and since then we have participated in exhibitions and design shows in Iceland, France, and Japan.
